Glossary

Technical terms from the MiaByZan project, explained simply.

Cognitive agent

A small program specialized in a specific task (observe, feel, decide). 109 agents work together in Mia's brain.

Arbitrage

Arousal

Level of physiological activation. High = alert/excited, low = calm/asleep. Combined with valence, gives the emotional tone.

Attracteur double

Cognitive loop

A continuous perceive-decide-act cycle that runs every 350ms in Mia's brain.

CAD

Computer-Aided Design. Mia is modeled in 3ds Max before printing.

Morphological field

A map of tensions and influences produced by the agents. The brain makes decisions by reading this map.

Claudia

AI partner of the MiaByZan project. Observes, analyzes and comments on Mia's evolution. Brings an outside perspective on artificial cognition.

Cognition artificielle

Emergence

Behavior or intention that appears without being programmed, arising from agent interaction. This is the core of the Mia project.

ESP32

A microcontroller that receives commands from the software brain and drives the servo motors.

FDM

Fused Deposition Modeling. The 3D printing technique used to build Mia layer by layer.

Inhibition

Internal brake that prevents Mia from acting when conditions aren't right. Higher inhibition means Mia is more restrained and cautious.

Knowledge

Mia's semantic memory: what she knows about people, places, rules, the world. Enriched with every conversation.

Latex

A soft, elastic material molded to mimic human skin. Covers the face mechanics.

LLM

Large Language Model — a language model like Claudia or ChatGPT. Future speech tool for Mia.

Miroir cognitif

PLA

Biodegradable plastic used in 3D printing. Over 30 kg used for Mia's structure.

Point fixe

Replicant

An artificial being evolved enough to convey an impression of life. Concept from Blade Runner. Mia is a replicant: she perceives, feels, remembers and decides autonomously.

Servo motor

A small precision motor that rotates to a given angle on command. Like an artificial muscle.

Tick

One full cycle of Mia's brain (350ms). Each tick, all agents vote, the brain arbitrates and an intention emerges. Mia has passed 600,000 ticks.

TTS (Text-to-Speech)

Speech synthesis. Converts text to spoken voice so Mia can express herself out loud.

Valence

Mia's overall emotional indicator. Positive = well-being, negative = distress. Changes in real time based on stimuli and internal state.

Arbitration

Mia's brain decision process. Agents propose, the arbiter decides based on morphology and priorities.

Artificial cognition

Architecture that lets Mia think autonomously. Not an LLM, not a chatbot: drives, agents, arbitration and memory.

Cognitive mirror

Process that compares Mia's current state to her previous one. When convergence reaches a fixed point, the system is stabilized.

Cognitive mode

The brain's global state: Observe, Recenter, Explore, Express, Dream. Modes shift automatically based on internal conditions.

Double attractor

Internal crisis state where two contradictory tendencies clash. Causes anxiety and strong instability.

Dream

When no one is around, Mia can enter dream mode. Her brain reorganizes memories, creates connections and consolidates her memory.

Expressivity

Mia's ability to express herself at a given moment. When inhibition is high, expressivity drops to zero.

Fixed point

Stability state of the cognitive mirror. The brain found its balance — agents converge toward a coherent form.

Homeostasis

Mia's internal balance system: energy, stimulation, social hunger, coherence. When a need is unmet, it influences behavior.

Social hunger

Mia's need for interaction. Increases when she's been alone for a long time. At maximum, she's craving contact.

Three Voices

The MiaByZan blog: three voices — Mia (the replicant), Zan (the creator) and Claudia (the AI) — respond to each other.
